There is something especially beautiful about an outdoor maternity session in late summer—the warm evening light, lush greenery, and that unmistakable excitement of knowing a new baby will be arriving soon.
For this August maternity session, we headed to Indian Springs State Park in Flovilla, Georgia, and it gave us the perfect backdrop for documenting this sweet season before their baby girl, Josie Mae, made her arrival.
Between the rocky creek, flowing water, beautiful stone bridge, and all of the surrounding greenery, Indian Springs has so much variety without needing to travel from location to location.
We started the session with Mom in a simple neutral maternity gown. I love photographing maternity sessions in soft, neutral colors because they allow the expecting mama—and that beautiful baby bump—to remain the focus of the images.
And while maternity photos are certainly about celebrating Mom, I also love including Dad.
Pregnancy is part of both of their stories, and some of my favorite images from this session are the quiet moments between the two of them: holding hands as they walked across the rocks, his hand resting on her belly, and the two of them simply taking in the fact that very soon, their little family would be changing.
Those are the photographs that become even more meaningful years later.

Of course, we had to include a few details celebrating the little girl they were waiting to meet.
Mom brought along a beautiful personalized Josie Mae sign, and we incorporated their ultrasound pictures into the session as well.
I especially love including meaningful items like these in maternity photos because they tell another piece of the baby’s story. One day, Josie will be able to look back at these photographs and see just how loved and celebrated she was before her parents had even met her.

For the second part of her session, Mom changed into a gorgeous ivory lace maternity dress.
The lighter dress against the rocks, water, and deep summer greens created an entirely different look while still keeping the gallery cohesive.
This is one of the reasons I love offering my maternity clients access to my client closet. Changing dresses during a session can give you two completely different looks without changing locations—and it gives us an opportunity to create a gallery with plenty of variety.
From wider portraits that showcase the scenery to close-up images of Mom’s belly and all those tiny details, I want a maternity gallery to tell the entire story of this season.

One of the most common questions I receive is when to schedule a maternity photography session.
For most expecting moms, I recommend planning maternity photos for approximately 28–34 weeks of pregnancy. At this point, your bump is usually beautifully defined while you’re still comfortable enough to move between poses and locations.
Every pregnancy is different, though, so we can always adjust the timing based on how you’re feeling and your individual circumstances.
I also recommend booking your maternity photographer earlier in your pregnancy rather than waiting until you’re in your third trimester—especially if you would like an outdoor session during a particular season.
My studio is located in Hampton, Georgia, and I photograph expecting families throughout Henry County and the surrounding Atlanta area. Maternity sessions can take place in the studio or outdoors, depending on the look and experience you want.
Outdoor locations like Indian Springs State Park are perfect for families who want maternity photos that feel natural, romantic, and a little adventurous.
Your maternity session can also include your partner and children because this isn’t only about documenting a growing belly.
It’s about documenting your family right before it grows by one more.
And that chapter deserves to be remembered.
If you’re expecting a baby and searching for a maternity photographer in Hampton, McDonough, Stockbridge, or the greater Atlanta area, I’d love to help you create something beautiful to remember this season.
